There won’t probably be any computer user who has not been hit by a virus attack. The loss of data, the mental agony, and time lost in waiting for help would have taken away our peace of mind for at least the next couple of days. Many are still loath to get an anti-virus software installed in their computers. Technopark Living has reviewed the anti-virus softwares available in India, and come up with two solutions – the free, easy and effective Microsoft Security Essentials and the powerful and versatile Kaspersky Anti-Virus.
Microsoft Security Essentials
This is one of the most valuable free software from Microsoft, but unknown to most average computer users. Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) is exactly the opposite of what the Linux media wants to say about Microsoft – it is free to use, light on system resources, and does its work efficiently. Available for Windows XP, Vista and 7 editions (if you are using a pirated system, you won’t be able to install this). If you are an average computer user, who does not install and test out too many programs downloaded from the internet, this one is for you. Just install, and continue using your computer as usual. It is so light, you won’t even notice that it has been installed in your computer. It just sits there, gets the latest updates from the internet and does its work silently. Highly Recommended.
Kaspersky is a paid anti-virus program. Before you wonder, it costs under Rs.300 for a 1 user-license and under Rs.600 for a 3-user license. The licenses are valid for one year. You can first have a 30-day free trial. Download it and try it for 30 days – if you like it, buy it. Do not buy online from the Kaspersky site, it costs much more there. Buy it from a local dealer or on Ebay India. Though you get a CD with the setup program installed, what you really need is only the license key. Once it is validated online, you get regular updates for one year. Recommended for advanced computer users who like to play around with the settings and keep a highly configured system.
