Saint Thyagaraja was born 400 years ago in Tamil Nadu, Tiruvarur. His deep devotion to Lord Rama brought out almost 24000 kritis of which only 700 are available today. The pinnacle of them is the 5 kritis called the “Pancharatnas”.
His deep respect for moral values brought out in grueling situations was reflected in his compositions.
Today, he is remembered and honored by all Carnatic musicians and others as an inspiring Saint who pioneered new concepts in music. His compositions were more out of experiencing devotion to God rather than technicalities.
Every year, between January and February, musicians have a festival called “Thyagaraja Aaradhana” at Tiruvarur on the banks of River Kaveri to celebrate his birth anniversary. In the festival, hundreds of musicians sing the “Pancharatnas” in unison.
This festival was started almost 150 years ago and still continues with the same fervor even today.
